45 white and 22 red grape varieties are admissible in the Palatinate, Germany’s largest continuous winegrowing region. These include regional specialities such as St. Laurent or Muskateller, internationally fashionable varieties such as Chardonnay and Merlot, as well as new varieties such as Regent. With their individual aromas, together they provide a full range of taste experiences. The Palatinate offers enjoyment for everyone and yet remains distinctive: a handful of standard varieties occupy almost two thirds of the Palatinate’s winegrowing area. In first place is Riesling, the undisputed number one grape in the Palatinate vineyard. Müller-Thurgau/Rivaner, Kerner, and Silvaner are also well represented in the Palatinate wine-lover’s repertoire. Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) are gaining ground year by year and more than one third of the growing area is covered with red varieties. Dornfelder, Portugieser, and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are riding the crest of the red wine wave. There nevertheless remains room for local specialties. In that sense, the twelve essential grape varieties introduced in this brochure stand for the many varieties grown in the Palatinate. They all invite you to come and discover the vineyards and cellars of the Palatinate yourself.
